Within the first 20 seconds of this interview, Lauren Roegele, co-founder of YOGO.tv and head instructor at Vancouver School of Yoga, knocked me off my feet with her confident and clear statement:

“I actually found yoga the week I had planned to kill myself.”

Lauren and I had chatted numerous times leading up to this interview, and I thought I knew the gist of her story, but you can see it in my face that I was blown away and trying to keep my cool in the presence of her heartfelt transparency. Editing this interview, I couldn’t help but feel like a bit of an ass, because I talk in the beginning as if I knew what she had been through, when really, I had absolutely no idea.

I hear people say ‘yoga saved my life’ more often than you’d imagine. Some say it with a laugh, some say it with the glimmer of tears in their eyes; Lauren says it with more sincerity than I’ve ever heard in my life.

This interview was so humbling for me, which has really been a theme this year so far because I’ve been spending hours on the ‘back end’ of my site and my business, figuring out exactly what it is that I want to be putting out to the world, and detailing exactly how and who I want to help with my message and my story.

Sometimes I get so stuck after watching all the amazing videos online, and seeing where I am right now, I think ‘how on earth am I going to get from here to there?’.

The answer, of course, is one step, one hour, and one day at a time, which is exactly how anybody gets from somewhere to anywhere. It’s how Lauren got to where she is today after she was hit as a pedestrian by a drunk driver more than ten years ago, and forced to rebuild her body, her life, and most importantly, her relationship with herself.

So grab a tea, a soft blanket, and some headphones. Let’s talk about yoga. Let’s talk about comparing ourselves to others, finding hope when we’re broken beyond repair, and cultivating love for ourselves despite what’s happened to us in our lives because that really is the only option for true happiness.

Ps. This video is in two parts because YouTube only lets me publish 15 minutes at a time.
